1. where are really good places to own a winery besides california and the place has to be in the United States
2. how much money is need to run a small winery
3. Do i need a degree to run a winery
1. Outside of CA, look to OR
2. A good chunk. You need a lot of land and either buy a pre-existing winery or you would require all new wine making equipment. Most vats alone are over $15,000.
3. No, you need money and you need to pass inspections for cleanliness, quality, etc. Y'know, make sure you aren't selling poison. If you have no history of homemaking wine, you should strongly consider hiring someone who does to be a lead winemaker and let them control the production while you focus on business operations. Of course, as owner, you get to do whatever you want and if that means you want samples, so be it!
If you make your own grapes, expect a fluctuating income. In fact, don't count on a profit for several years. Nature will have its own say in how much and what quality wine you get to produce. If you use other peoples wines, expect a higher expense, lower profits and rest easy knowing you're more or less lying to customers.
